David Ekserdjian: God and the Painters
In this intriguing introduction to the extraordinary richness and variety (and occasional weirdness) of Italian renaissance altarpieces, Professor Ekserdjian explores the rich content of Italian renaissance altarpieces and the stories they tell. Drawing from his 2021 book, ‘The Italian Renaissance Altarpiece: Between Icon and Narrative’, he delves into the diverse and often surprising imagery of these works. While many altarpieces depict the Madonna and Child or scenes from Christian life, this talk reveals the lesser-known, more unconventional interpretations.
